December News from the SAS

The Archaeology Centre (1-1730 Quebec Avenue) is open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm and on Fridays by appointment. Staff can still be reached via email or by phoning the office (306-664-4124). We are a mask-friendly facility and ask any visitors to please wear a mask when visiting the office. Disposable masks are available for visitors at the office.

Holiday Office Closure
We will be closed from Friday, December 23, 2022 to Monday, January 2, 2023 inclusive. We will reopen for regular office hours at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Den of Antiquity Update:
Please note that we will be filling orders up until December 22, 2022! If you submit an order after December 22, 2022, the order won’t be filled until staff are back in the office in early January 2023. Buy lots and buy early!

Chapter News

All Points Saskatchewan Archaeological Society:

Prince Albert Historical Society: The ‘Afternoon Tea at the Museum’ will be held on December 18th. Two seatings are available at 2pm and 3:15pm. The cost is $30 a person. Please contact the Historical Museum at 306-764-2992 to reserve your seat. The Historical Museum will be open December 21 – 23 from 1- 4 with activities starting at 1:00 for the whole family.  Please pre-register for these activities by calling (306) 764-2992 or emailing museumeducator@historypa.com. December 21 – Make a Felt Snowman Face Christmas Ornament.  Adults and children 8 and up will stitch their ornament.  Children 8 and under will glue their ornament together.  Children will need an adult to assist them. December 22 – Make a Tree Slice Ornament using decoupage and vintage images. December 23 – Make a popsicle stick Sled or Snowflake Ornament. The Historical Museum will be open December 28-30  from 1 to 4pm. Game On!  Join  us each day at 2:00 to play board games or card games.  Learn how to play some traditional games.  Did you get a great board game or card game for Christmas? Bring it to the museum and teach us how to play. There will also be a coffee and conversation program on Thursday December 29 at 2pm. Fred Payton will talk about Central Avenue at Christmas. All events are open to the public. The museums will be closed December 24-27, and December 31-January 2. We will re-open January 3. For up to date information please visit our Facebook page.

Regina Archaeological Society: On Wednesday December 14th, 2022 at 7:00pm the RAS chapter will partner with the APSAS chapter who is hosting presenter Jeff O’Brien, Saskatoon city Archivist. His presentation is titled “From Temperance Colony to Prairie City: Stories of Early Saskatoon, 1883-1914”. To obtain Zoom link please refer to APSAS poster under APSAS announcements. The RAS will have a hybrid Christmas social this year. For those wishing to meet in person we will have lunch at the Grant Hall Hotel in Moose Jaw on December 10th and for those who would rather meet over Zoom we will meet on the evening of December 20th. Saskatoon Archaeological Society:  The Saskatoon Chapter is pleased to present 3 presenters from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Jared T. Hogan will present on “Marginalized Visibility: Scrutinizing the Digital Representation of Indigenous Cultures at Red Bay National Historic Site, Labrador, and L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, Newfoundland”. Sarah Roberts will speak on “Thy Real Friend George Skeffington: Archaeological Investigation of 18th-century European Salmon Fishing on the Gander River” and Jordan Hollahan on “An Analysis of Seventeenth-Century Firearms at the Ferryland Site (CgAf-2)”.  Anyone interested in attending can email saskatoon.archaeology@gmail.com or visit their Facebook group for the Zoom link.

Call for SAS Board Nominations

The following positions are open for nominations:

  • President
  • First Vice-President
  • Second Vice-President
  • 2 Members-at-Large

All terms are for two years. Incumbents may run for a consecutive term, with a maximum service of six consecutive years in the same position. The SAS has four board meetings per year (on Saturdays). There may be additional meetings called for committee work. The SAS values diversity and inclusivity. We welcome applications from individuals who have skills in finance, fundraising, human resources, governance, policy, risk management, technology and marketing.
