From the Newsletter of the South Dakota State Historical Society: “The Archaeological Research Center (ARC) has published the first guide in its “Cultural Material Series”, Tool Stone Found at South Dakota Archaeological Sites. It is approximately 200 pages in length and describes cherts, chalcedonies, quartzites, catlinite, red pipestone, obsidian, porcellanite, non-volcanic natural glass, and quartz found in cultural contexts throughout the state. The materials come from South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon and Qyoming. The intended audience is field archaeologists, students of archaeology and anyone who has ever picked up a rock.”
